How to lure and tame animals in Hytale

How to Lure and Tame Animals in Hytale

There are plenty of animals that you must lure back to your base in Hytale.

During your time in Hytale, you will be collecting various resources like ores, wood, and more to build structures with. During your exploration, you will also see many animals wandering the forests.

While animals are a great source of hide, you might want to keep them instead. After all, chickens lay eggs that you can eat for nutrients, sheep can be sheared for wool, and you can ride horses, so keeping a few pets is very much something worth considering.

Let's break down everything you need to know about luring, taming, and capturing animals in Hytale.

How to Lure Animals

Hytale Crafting a Feed Bag

The first step in this process is luring animals back to your home. This isn't the most difficult task in Hytale, as you simply need a feed bag to accomplish it.

Start by building a Farmer's Workbench. This will require six tree logs and 20 plant fiber. Once you have these items, craft the Farmer's Workbench around your camp.

To get the feed bag, you will need:

With these items, go to the Farmer's Workbench and make your feed bag. With this item in your hands, walk up to animals, and they will gravitate toward you for a while.

Through testing, we noticed that not all animals are attracted to the feed bag, but the following ones are:

  • Boars
  • Chickens
  • Turkeys
  • Deer
  • Pigeons

There are animals for which we have not yet tested the feed bag. We also noticed that some animals will follow you, but once they lose interest, it is difficult to get them to follow the bag again.

Horses are different from other animals as they are not attracted to the feed bag. Instead, you will need to hold a carrot out for them. This will allow you to get close to a horse without them running away.

How to Capture Animals

Along with luring animals, you will want to know how to capture them. This will allow you to place them in a pen without worrying about them escaping.

To capture animals, you will need to build a capture crate at a Farmer's Workbench using the following items:

  • 4 Wood
  • 50 Essence of Life

Once you have crafted this item, hold it in your hands and walk up to a small critter. Pressing the left mouse button while looking at a small critter will allow you to capture it. This works on the following creatures:

  • Foal
  • Lamb
  • Rabbits
  • Baby Pigs
  • Meerkats
  • Frogs
  • Calves
  • Mice
  • Squirrels

You can only fit one animal inside a capture crate at a time, so if you want to capture multiple creatures, you will need multiple crates. Capture crates do not need to be repaired, so you can use them as many times as you want.

Hytale, unfortunately, doesn't have much in terms of taming animals. You can lure animals using the feed bag, or you can capture them using the capture crate, but you can't make them stay.

After placing an animal in a pen, it will stay there, but it will try to leave if you give it the opportunity. Similarly, if you ride a horse, it will run away from you if you aren't holding a carrot when you dismount.

Since Hytale is in early access, we imagine that there will be more added in the future to expand on the current taming aspects that are already in the game.
