How to look as good as Colman Domingo in a white tee and jeans

At this point, we can all agree that Colman Domingo is as talented at pulling off wild red carpet fits (see: the Oscars, the Golden Globes, the Met Gala) as he is at bringing complex characters to life on screen (see: Euphoria, Disclosure Day, Michael). Whether he’s in head-to-toe couture or strolling in Tribeca in jeans and a tank top, Domingo has the rare ability to look extremely put-together and extremely comfortable at the same time. Such was the case earlier this week, when he was photographed on his way to guest-host Jimmy Kimmel Live! wearing the absolute heck out of a white tee and jeans.

Under normal circumstances, a white T-shirt and a pair of blue jeans is as reliable a combo as pancakes and maple syrup, but it’s not a look one tends to associate with god-tier style. Per usual, however, Domingo made it his own, dialing in the details to create something worth far more than the sum of its parts.

From the jump, it’s worth noting that, as a house ambassador for Valentino, Domingo has a ton of extremely vibey clothing at his disposal, and he pulled liberally from the house of Garavani for this look. That said, a head-to-toe designer fit is by no means a slam dunk, and Domingo’s ability to make this one look extremely chill speaks to his preternatural ability to look good in whatever he wears.

For starters: the tee. It doesn’t matter if it’s from Lady White Co. or a Kirkland multipack, the fit is what matters, and Domingo has it nailed down—fitted but not skin-tight. The jeans, likewise, are cut to perfection, with just a hint of a flare to contrast the tee. What really pulls this look together, though, are the accessories: the skinny belt, the chain, the Nellcôte tote, the teeny tiny Omega Constellation. None of these details call attention to themselves but, like one of the many great ensemble casts of which Domingo has been a part, each has an important role to play. Even the oxblood penny loafers (worn, it’s worth noting, with socks) are just different enough in color from the belt to keep things from looking too matchy matchy.

If there is a lesson to be learned from Domingo’s summer uniform, it’s that even the wildest dressers know how to look good in a T-shirt and jeans. Or, if you want to get really philosophical about it, that the simplest things can also be the most complex.
