Jet Greaves established himself as the Columbus Blue Jackets’ No. 1 goaltender in 2025-26 — and now he wants to be paid like one.
Greaves and the Jackets are $4.7 million apart in their arbitration filings on Tuesday, as first reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
“Arbitration filings are in for Columbus and Jet Greaves. Team: $2.8M, Player: $7.5M,” the hockey insider wrote. “Remember these are strategic, but that is quite a gap. Hearing Thursday. Once it starts, there can be no settlement.”

Both sides will likely try to bridge that gap before Thursday’s hearing and avoid arbitration altogether, although the difference is substantial. It’s a tricky situation because Greaves was excellent in 2025-26, but he’s only been a full-time starter for one season.
Arbitration awards often land somewhere between the two filings, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see Greaves earn around $5 million. If he and the front office can’t find an agreeable number, he can only get a maximum two-year contract extension through arbitration.
That would walk him to unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2028.
The Cambridge, Ontario native was a bright spot in a non-playoff season in Ohio, posting a 26-19-9 record along with a .908 save percentage, a 2.60 goals-against average and two shutouts over 55 appearances. He also ranked eighth among all goaltenders with a 31.71 goals saved above expected.
Greaves was excellent for Team Canada at the IIHF World Championship in May, going 6-2 while managing a .920 SV% and 1.88 GAA.
Despite going undrafted, Greaves climbed through the Blue Jackets organization; he earned his NHL opportunity after being called up from the Cleveland Monsters in January 2023. He signed a three-year, entry-level contract back in 2022, and has played in 76 games for the team in his career.
He just played out the final season of a two-year, $1.63 million pact signed in July of 2024.
Greaves has usurped Elvis Merzlikins as the No. 1 goaltender on Columbus’ depth chart; Phoenix Copley is the third netminder on the roster.
Columbus has more than $23 million in salary-cap space, according to PuckPedia, with restricted free agents Adam Fantilli and Cole Sillinger also still unsigned. Sillinger’s arbitration hearing is scheduled for July 27.
AFP Analytics projects Greaves to land either a one-year contract worth roughly $4 million or a two-year deal carrying a $6 million average annual value.
