When Pat McAfee dropped a 94-second sample of his musical stylings with his first public song “Dookie” last December, curiosity got the best of me and I gave it a whirl. After about the third listen, dear readers, the infectious rhythm and lyrics burrowed into my brain. So be forewarned, if this is your first exposure to McAfee the artist, a similar thing could happen to you.
McAfee surprised a lot of people on Wednesday when he teased an even more fulsome release.

“For as long as I can remember my mere existence has made people hate my guts, McAfee wrote on X. “I’ve been writing songs about it for 20yrs & it’s time to let them aht.. A LOT of headlines & narratives.. if I was to die, I’d like my kids to know exactly who their dad is.”
The album, apparently out on August 14, is called “The Diary of a Polarizing Figure” and features a cover that will stare into your soul just daring you to say anything.
So I will.
I’m looking forward to listening to this.
It’s clearly a very personal passion project and if “Dookie” is the appetizer then, heck yeah, let’s get a look at the main course. Outside of the above information, there’s little else to use as evidence to guess what type of genre the McAfee project will fit into. Though knowing the way the ESPN personality/wrestler/headline maker has gone about his post-playing career, odds are it won’t fit neatly into a single box.
The album’s title nods to to McAfee’s status as a polarizing figure in the sports media world. And without taking sides on any of the friction that has come along the way with him becoming arguably ESPN’s biggest star, there might be some diss tracks aimed at unconventional targets. That would be wildly entertaining.
Also, what if it is really, really good? We just don’t know yet. August 14 cannot get here soon enough.
