DC's Dark Knight Batman is famously one of the most capable heroes in fiction, but is he so unbeatable that even the Avengers can't compete? This is the question Marvel and DC have posed to fans many times, with the Dark Knight having met (and fought) most of Marvel's greatest heroes over the years.
Here are the top 5 fights where Batman took on an Avenger, and who came out as the winner. Did any of Earth's Mightiest Heroes have what it took to defeat the Caped Crusader?
Captain America vs Batman
In DC vs. Marvel and JLA/Avengers
Batman and Captain America have fought multiple times, with one technical victory and one draw. In JLA/Avengers (from Kurt Busiek, George Pérez, Tom Smith and Richard Starkings), Batman and Cap square off, testing each other to try and gain an advantage. After a few moments' analysis, Batman admits that Marvel's Super Soldier could take him down, but that it would waste the time they need to confront the evil force pitting their two worlds together. The two declare a draw and team-up.
In DC vs. Marvel #3 (from Ron Marz, Dan Jurgens, Claudio Castellini, Joe Rubinstein, Paul Neary, Gregory Wright and Bill Oakley), Batman and Captain America engage in a lengthy battle. While Cap is the stronger fighter, Batman utilizes their surroundings far better. When their fight moves to Manhattan's sewers, Cap is swept away by a rush of water, surviving because Batman goes to his aid.
Marvel fans have argued that Captain America taking down Prometheus - a DC villain who KO'd Batman easily - proves he'd win any honest fight, but so far it's just a theory.
Wolverine vs Batman
In Marvel/DC: Deadpool/Batman #1's 'Showdown'
In a short story from Frank Miller, Alex Sinclair and Joe Caramagna, the two grim heroes battle it out while hurling insults. The story ultimately hands the victory to Batman, with Wolvie calling it quits after the Dark Knight wraps him in explosives. Miller - one of the most iconic writers to depict both heroes - at least has Wolverine threaten a rematch at a later date.
Daredevil vs Batman
In Daredevil/Batman: Eye for an Eye
When Two-Face and Mr. Hyde team up, Batman and Daredevil form a vigilante team to bring the two duality-obsessed villains down. However, not before Batman tries to dissuade Daredevil from getting in his way.
In this story from D.G. Chichester, Scott McDaniel, Derek Fisher, Bill Oakley and Gregory Wright, the two engage in a brief brawl as Matt Murdock proves he can keep up with Bruce Wayne. Batman gets in more solid hits but can't hold onto the acrobatic Daredevil, resulting in a draw when they finally agree they're better off as a team than opponents.
Deadpool vs Batman
In Marvel/DC: Deadpool/Batman #1's 'The Dead of Knight'
In the title match-up of this anthology comic, Deadpool and Batman star in 'The Dead of Knight' by Zeb Wells, Greg Capullo, Tim Townsend, Alex Sinclair and Clayton Cowles. In the story, Joker hires Deadpool to bring him the Caped Crusader, with the two trading punches and swapping blades.
Technically, the victory here goes to Deadpool. While Wade surrenders to Batman after being wrapped up by a well-placed bola, he bides his time and knocks out the Dark Knight at a key moment, ultimately delivering him to Joker.
It's not a clean victory, but since the two decide to team-up against Joker soon afterwards, it's as close to a conclusion as the fight gets.
Hulk vs Batman
In Batman vs. The Incredible Hulk #1
Yes, Batman really took on the Hulk, and the most outrageous part is that he won. In this comic from Len Wein, José Luis García-López, Dick Giordano, Glynis Wein and John Costanza, Batman tries everything to defeat Bruce Banner's alter ego, striking at pressure points while dodging hurled cars. As a desperate last attempt, Batman throws knockout gas at Hulk's feet, but the Green Goliath just holds his breath...
Thankfully, a kick to the gut forces Hulk to breathe in, and the Jade Giant inhales the gas, collapsing soon afterwards. While it may seem outrageous that Marvel's strongest hero of all time could be beaten by a non-powered human, Hulk has never been a smart fighter, while Batman is all about tactics and skill.
In a later rematch, Hulk brings down a building on Batman's head, only leaving because the Dark Knight hides in the rubble, faking death. It's fair to call this an overall 1-1 draw (though Batman's victory was inarguably more impressive.)
