LeBron James' decision to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the summer of 2014 after years of being vilified for leaving them in the first place was and will always be one of the most memorable moments in sports history.
When James left Cleveland in 2010, the Cavaliers had just finished with the league's best regular-season record but fell short of a championship once again.
His departure turned him from Akron's own superstar into the sports version of the ultimate villain, with fans burning his jerseys and even Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert infamously publishing a scathing open letter.
However, as he became more vilified, his career changed during his four seasons in Miami. Playing alongside Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, the Heat reached four consecutive Finals and won back-to-back rings in 2012 and 2013, cementing themselves as basketball's greatest player.
But by the summer of 2014, Bron had accomplished nearly everything critics claimed he couldn't, except for bringing a ring to his hometown. This was certainly the case, but the decision to return home was also about family, specifically Bron's children, who played a significant role in it, as it was for his career.
Coming home
The reality was that by 2014, LeBron was no longer just a young superstar who only thought about himself and his career. He was now a husband and father, whose choices affected his entire family. Rather than just deciding for his whole family, James wanted to hear what his children thought of returning home to Akron.
"Asked them first. I didn't explain it to them, they explained it to me. I was like, 'What do you think about daddy going back home to play?'" Bron shared." They was like, 'Home, you talking about Cleveland?' You get to play with Kyrie Irving.'"
"I was like, 'Yeah,' they was like, 'We get to go back home to our house and I get to go back home to my old school and my old friends, like, 'Yeah, you can do it.' And that's how it went," he added.
There was undoubtedly a feeling of home still evident in Cleveland for James and his whole family, despite the villainous treatment he received. And after four years of having the attention focused on his highs and lows in Miami, Bron's knee was time to return home, and his children's sentiments only made things clearer.
It was clear James still loved Cleveland and, from a basketball standpoint, the team had become wildly different since he left. The Cavaliers had one of the league's best young premier point guards in Kyrie Irving and had built arguably a roster capable of supporting Bron than in his first seven-year stint with the team.
Still, leaving Miami wasn't easy. James was walking away from one of the greatest teams ever produced. After a heartbreaking defeat to the San Antonio Spurs in the Finals that year, there was undeniably still some unfinished business.
However, in his famous essay announcing his return, James emphasized that the decision to return to Ohio wasn't really about himself or his career. It was about fulfilling a promise to his hometown by getting them a ring, which he eventually did in 2016.
Another possible reunion
After delivering Cleveland its first major professional sports title in 52 years after coming back from a 3-1 deficit against the 73-win Golden State Warriors in 2016, James' legacy was forever cemented in the city.
Once he left Cleveland once again in 2018 to go to the Los Angeles Lakers, he was no longer vilified like he had been the first time. There was love and affection at every corner for the King, who delivered on once-impossible dream.
Now, more than a decade later, after his return, James' future is once again up in the air. After informing the Lakers that he plans to explore his options for the next and possibly his final season, questions have naturally resurfaced about whether another Cleveland reunion could be possible.
Ultimately, it's still uncertain whether he will return and end his legendary career back home. After all, his children have all grown up, with Bronny even playing for the Lakers. It seems that LeBron's next and final decision will be his most unpredictable yet.
Still, James' connection to Cleveland is impossible to overlook. Cleveland will forever represent his childhood, his family and, ultimately, his home. Whether there is still another chapter to be written for the King in Cleveland or not, he has already delivered on his promise.
