Historic 66-year-old Texas saddle shop to reopen after yearlong closure

After closing its doors in 2025 and potentially being linked to Canadian rapper and sometimes Texas resident Drake, a historic saddle shop has announced it's reopening in the fall. 

When the Brenham Saddle Shop closed in April 2025, rumors swirled that Drake himself had bought the shop from the family that had owned and operated it for more than 60 years. Drake bought a massive estate near Brenham in 2023 and has since been a regular sight in the area, popping up and supporting local businesses and even enjoying local dive bars. Drake had frequented the saddle shop many times.

In April 2025, the owners decided to close the shop, noting that the closure would not be permanent and the store's legacy would still live on. At the time, owner of Brenham Saddle Shop Sage Nutt declined to comment to Chron about any sale, but spoke positively about Drake's presence and activity in the community. 

The shop's social media page was wiped, and last year an image of a cowboy with a giant belt buckle was posted, with the caption "The legacy continues…see you all again soon."  The post incited even more speculation. 

Now the account has posted for the first time in 55 weeks, announcing that it will reopen this fall.

From the comments, the Brenham community and fans of the famous saddle shop are very excited to see the shop's return. There are a couple of ice cube emojis from Drake fans, but the reception is mostly people happy that there is finally an update. So is Drake really the new owner?

Currently, the trademark for Brenham Saddle Shop was filed by and is owned by ADG Vanguard IP LLC, a Los Angeles, California-based firm. The trademark, which is now labeled as dead/abandoned, was filed on April 10, 2025. The current live trademark for Brenham Saddle Shop was filed for and approved in November 2025, executed by Austin-based lawyer Robert Kleinman of Common Sense Counsel.

Kleinman is an intellectual property attorney who has handled trademark and copyright matters for Drake in the past. He famously applied for the trademark to the phrase "Certified Lover Boy" on Drake's behalf ahead of the 2020 album of the same name's release. Common Sense Council serves as the representative, correspondent, and legal advisor for ADG Vanguard IP LLC. (Chron has reached out to Common Sense and ADG Vanguard regarding the trademark.)

The transaction was a full transfer from the original owners to its new ownership.

Whenever he is in the Lone Star State, Drake has been living his version of the Texas lifestyle as cinematically documented in the music video for "Plot Twist" from his Iceman album. The Brenham Saddle Shop is possibly another extension of that ideal Texas freedom he is chasing.
