Plans are moving forward for one Texas-born Tex-Mex chain to replace another in Houston. A permit has officially been filed for Cabo Bob's to open its first Inner Loop restaurant at 3905 Kirby Dr. in what used to be a Taco Cabana. That location was one of many that quietly closed across the city and state during the final quarter of 2025.
According to project details submitted with Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, the chain plans to spend an estimated $500,000 renovating the 4,000-square-foot restaurant, with construction scheduled to begin in September and wrap up by the end of the year.
A Cabo Bob's spokesperson confirmed the Austin-based burrito chain's move into the former home of the San Antonio-based taco chain in May, as Chron previously reported, saying the expansion was part of a "steady push into Houston."
An official opening date has yet to be announced, but once open, this will be the fifth Cabo Bob's location in Houston, joining its other restaurants near Meadows Place, Uptown and Willowbrook, as well as in Katy.
The fast-casual burrito brand, which opened its first restaurant in Austin in 2008, has 11 locations across Texas, including the state capital and Houston, along with San Antonio.
Though Cabo Bob's got its start in Texas, each restaurant is inspired by locations in San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico, according to the company's website. But all dish classic Tex-Mex fare including build-your-own bowls, burritos, nachos, quesadillas, salads and tacos made with fresh, scratch-made ingredients, including its four varieties of flour tortillas.
