A hiker in medical distress was airlifted from the top of Bishop Peak in San Luis Obispo on Tuesday.
Around 11:30 a.m., SLO City Fire Department was alerted to two hikers on the top of Bishop Peak who could not make it down on their own, spokesperson Joe Little told The Tribune.
One of the hikers, a woman, was in medical distress, SLO City Fire acting Deputy Chief John MacDonald told The Tribune.
The Fire Department’s urban search and rescue team responded with an off-road vehicle and a helicopter from the California Highway Patrol, Little said.
A paramedic was sent in by helicopter and the female patient was evaluated at the top of the mountain before being hoisted to the base, MacDonald said.
She was ultimately transported to a local hospital with moderate symptoms, he said.
“It’s a nice warm day out here,” Little said. “We encourage folks who are out here to bring plenty of water, have a buddy, hike in the buddy system, have a working cell phone that’s charged and be able to make a call if necessary.”
