Two dozen high school students explored careers in medicine through hands-on activities at Guthrie Cortland Medical Center during the Medical Academy of Science and Health Camp held July 8-9.
The program brought together 24 students from districts across Cortland, Tompkins, Cayuga, Broome and Onondaga counties, offering them a behind-the-scenes look at multiple health care fields, according to a community announcement.
Participants began with simulations that mirrored the intensity of emergency care, rotating through stations focused on trauma response, triage and identifying critical equipment. Students also practiced locating supplies from a code cart while working under pressure to mimic real-world conditions.
Later, the pace shifted in Rehabilitation Services, where students still faced demanding challenges. Activities included testing grip strength, moving through obstacle courses in wheelchairs and safely tossing a water balloon while practicing proper lifting and bending techniques.
In a field outside the hospital, students gathered as a Mercy Flight helicopter landed nearby, giving them an up-close view of aerial medical transport. Crew members discussed how patients are transported and treated during flights, drawing strong interest from the group.
Throughout the two-day program, students interacted with professionals across several departments, including the operating room, cardiac rehabilitation, maternity care, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, imaging, laboratory services and environmental services.
The Medical Academy of Science and Health Camp is held each summer at Guthrie Cortland Medical Center to expose students to a variety of health care careers, according to the announcement.
