Harry Potter is taking over HBO.
The Harry Potter franchise is coming back, and this time in the form of a series. After seven fantasy novels, eight blockbuster movies, a Broadway play, and theme parks, HBO has decided to adapt the original novels into a more faithful adaptation. Each season will be adapting one of the novels, with season 1 titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
An official age rating for the upcoming Harry Potter season 1 has been unveiled and is currently listed on HBO Max as TV-14. This means that the program may contain material unsuitable for children under 14 years old, and parents are strongly cautioned. This is a slightly higher rating than the original Warner Bros. movie, The Philosopher's Stone, which the first season of the HBO series is based on.
The 2001 movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was rated PG-13, meaning that the rating for HBO's adaptation suggests more violence, frightening scenes, and mature themes, but still available to a younger audience. Most of the Harry Potter movies had a PG-13 rating, including the later movies, which certainly grew darker and far more violent as the characters aged, and the threats grew more significant.
HBO has become renowned worldwide for its most ambitious and successful fantasy adaptations. With series such as Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on George R.R. Martin's novels. The Game of Thrones universe is certainly far more explicit than its upcoming Harry Potter series, but with season 1 already set at a higher age rating than the original movie adaptation, it begs the question of how dark will HBO's adaptation truly be.
Director of photography Adriano Goldman recently shared updates regarding the status of Harry Potter season 1. According to Goldman, episode 1 has yet to be completed due to the sheer magnitude of the adaptation: "Episode 1 is still far from being finished, so I think we will still discuss this issue a little more." He also clarified that the filming conditions are "brutal" for its younger cast due to the lengthy shoots and their ongoing schoolwork.
Harry Potter is an incredibly rich franchise with a lot of inner workings that need to be addressed, especially given that HBO has famously led this new series with the promise that it will be far more faithful than the blockbuster movies that came before.
Goldman made a bold statement and said that "wouldn’t be surprised if it had the biggest construction budget ever, since it’s already had, you know, for this streaming project. Let’s put it that way—maybe it is, right? But what they built is colossal. And the finish is just incredible. I think—I think it’s going to be a hit; I think people are really going to love it, you know?" Leaving fans with high hopes for what's to come.
Season 1 of HBO's long-awaited adaptation Harry Potter is set to be released on December 25, and the season will consist of eight episodes. Season 2 is said to have already begun production as casting calls are underway for new characters to join the fantasy series.
