Hannah Harper shared the home video she and her family recorded when she made her debut at the historic Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee.
Harper, 26, offered a behind-the-scenes glimpse of her Opry debut on Instagram on Monday morning (July 20). She took the storied stage for the first time on June 2. The reigning American Idol winner wrote in her caption:
“Home video of my Opry debut. 🥹
“My grandpa Denver passed away when I was really little, but somehow I still feel like I knew him because of his camcorder. He filmed everything. Christmas mornings, birthdays, horse shows. He made sure the simple, ordinary moments were never forgotten. While his face was rarely in the videos, his voice was always there.
"My grandpa Bob passed away just a few months before I had Asa in 2023. I can only imagine his voice echoing through the backstage halls of the Opry. He wasn’t the type to carry a camera but before long, he would’ve found a guitar, gathered a few strangers, and had everyone singing together in some corner backstage.
“Asa never had the chance to meet his PaPa Lew, but he knows exactly who he is. He hears us tell his stories, speak his name often, and recognizes his face from the countless photos we took. It reminds me that even when someone is gone, the way they loved, lived, and impacted others doesn’t leave with them. Their legacy is carried on in the stories we tell, the traditions we keep, and the lives they continue to shape long after they’re gone.
“The older I get, the more I realize just how quickly time slips by. One day, these ordinary little moments will be the memories our kids and grandkids hold onto. The laughter in the background, the voices of the people they loved, the beautiful chaos of everyday life those are the things that become priceless.
“So this is my way of saying: buy the camera.
“Film the birthday parties. The kitchen conversations. The kids running through the house. The family on the porch. Capture the ordinary in a way that feels timeless, because years from now it won’t be the perfect shots that matter. It’ll be the voices, the laughter, the background noise, and the little moments you never realized you’d miss.
“Watching this back, my heart just about explodes. The room was full of visitors, little feet running around, conversations happening over one another, and all the beautiful chaos surrounding one of the biggest moments of my life.
“I’ll cherish this video forever. Not because it’s perfect, but because it feels like home.”
Harper, a mother of three from Willow Springs, Missouri, made a memorable impact from the beginning of her American Idol journey. She performed “String Cheese” for judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan and Carrie Underwood. The vulnerable, viral original song that opens up about overcoming postpartum depression brought Underwood, a mother of two, to tears. Bryan likened Harper’s voice to Kacey Musgraves, Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton and others. In May, Harper became the first female country artist to win American Idol since Underwood won the show’s fourth season in 2005.
