When you look back on Google Photos, it’s kind of amazing to see how far Google has come. The app started out as a way for users to backup their photos, but over time, it has turned into a photo editing tool as well, giving users quick, easy, and smarter ways of editing their photos. Now, Google has released a new update that gives users the choice to switch how users search for photos on Google Photos.
Google Photos lets users switch search styles
As some of you might have noticed, it wasn’t too long ago that Google released an “Ask Photos” feature for Google Photos. This feature basically relies on AI, allowing users to ask more complicated queries. Whereas in the past, Google Photos search was kind of simple and straightforward.
For instance, with the classic system, if you searched for “dog” or “car,” it would try to surface photos that match that description. With Ask Photos, you can ask more complex queries for more precise results. This isn’t to say that the older search method was bad. There might be a time and place for it.
This is why if you want to switch back and forth in Google Photos search, you can. As part of a recent update, Google is introducing a toggle that lets users switch between search methods. Move the toggle to the right and Ask Photos is enabled, and move it to the left and you bring back classic search.
However, as 9to5Google points out, sometimes it might switch automatically. For instance, if you set it to classic search, it will remain that way. But if your search query happens to be more complex, it switches to Ask Photos until you toggle it back.
Rolling out as we speak
The new update is rolling out to users as we speak. It also seems to be rolling out to both iOS and Android users at the same time. So if you don’t see the toggle yet, don’t worry. It probably means you’re either running on an older build or it hasn’t reached you yet. We imagine it should probably take a few days or a week before all users get it.
This change was actually spotted earlier this year. But it looks like Google is ready to release it to the masses.
