Explaining step-by-step digital routines to an AI assistant can often feel as tedious as doing the work yourself. Writing lengthy text prompts or precise scripts takes time, especially when dealing with complex desktop software. Anthropic is changing that workflow with a new feature for its Claude desktop app called “Record a Skill.” Built directly into the Claude Cowork environment, the tool allows users to teach the AI a repeatable task simply by sharing their screen and walking through the process in real time.
Instead of typing out instructions, users can turn their everyday clicks and keystrokes into automated actions that Claude can execute again whenever needed.
How visual skill capture works
Starting a demonstration is straightforward. Inside the Claude desktop application, users click the plus menu and select the new “Record a skill” option. From there, you perform your routine tasks on screen while speaking out loud to explain what you are doing. Behind the scenes, Claude tracks your screen activity, mouse paths, keystrokes, and voice commentary.
Once you have finished your session, the system will assemble your walkthrough into a reusable, structured skill within your personal library. You can then prompt Claude to do the exact same thing without ever needing to explain the steps again.
Lowering the bar for non-technical users
This feature expands on Claude Cowork’s existing suite of desktop tools, which already supports local file access, persistent memory, and connected apps. Anthropic aims to democratize digital automation by eliminating the need for complex prompt engineering and opting for simple visual demonstration instead. Now you don’t have to know how to code or write complicated system prompts.
The update moves Claude closer to acting like a true digital team member—one that learns organizational habits simply by watching how human employees work.
Access to “Record a Skill” is available immediately, though Anthropic is keeping the feature restricted to paid subscription tiers, including Claude Pro, Max, and Team plans.
