In this new era of premium-quality video game adaptations, God of War was an obvious choice. The gaming franchise has been popular for a decade, but the 2018 reboot of the series easily fit in with the tortured father protagonist found in The Last of Us. God of War and God of War: Ragnarök follow exiled god Kratos, who learns to connect with his young son while also teaching him the ways of godhood. Emotionally grounded and full of compelling mythology, the series was tailor-made for adaptation.
Battlestar Galactica and Outlander scribe Ronald D. Moore took this project to Prime Video, and for a time, it seemed too good to be true. Sons of Anarchy star Ryan Hurst was cast as Kratos until disaster struck. After suffering an on-set injury, the God of War production elected to recast him instead of waiting for his time to recuperate. This was a shocking decision, especially considering that the series already had four episodes in the bag. This turn of events is almost unheard of and could have massive repercussions for the show.
Recasting Kratos May Alienate the God of War Fanbase
Recasting isn’t that off base and is sometimes necessary when an actor voluntarily drops from a production. This is not the case with Ryan Hurst. The actor tore his bicep during filming, and his recovery time would have pushed the filming of God of War to 2027. Regarding filming delays, this doesn’t even come close to the disappointment of The Batman scheduling changes.
Regardless, the production opted not to wait for Hurst’s recuperation and instead will recast the lead role as the titular god of war. This isn’t just a tertiary character in a supportive role. Hurst is a dominating presence on screen and was perfect for Kratos. He was cast to carry this show on his broad shoulders, and yet, they discarded him easily. This decision is even more painful, considering the physical transformation the actor went through to emulate the muscly god.
God of War will likely have to reshoot the four episodes that were already filmed because of Kratos’ primary role, which also puts pressure on Callum Vinson, who portrays his son, Atreus. It's unclear how long the new casting process will take and if the actor will also have time to put on the pounds of muscle required for the role. What is certain is that this decision is divisive.
The waste of work put into the show is a hard pill to swallow and may complicate the continuity of the series. Perhaps the most difficult aspect is the loss of Hurst's potential in the role of Kratos. Especially after his role as Mentor in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, he proved he was the perfect actor for the job.
The fanbase had accepted him as a worthy successor to Christopher Judge, who made the character iconic in the game. Even hope for him to reprise his role as Thor from the game is dashed. The main pantheon of the Norse gods has already been cast, shutting out Hurst unfairly. Prime Video made a business decision, but this is one that may hurt a series that had so much potential.
