The New York Giants’ home of MetLife Stadium recently hosted games for the FIFA World Cup, with the field being converted to real grass for the festivities. For Giants’ and New York Jets’ home games, crews replace that with artificial turf, which has become a major talking point due to its propensity for player slippage and injury.
Naturally, fans have been calling for the NFL to simply keep the grass that was used for the World Cup in place for the upcoming NFL season, but now, Giants insider Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com has issued a stern message to those in favor of such an idea.
“I have zero issue supporting what I’ve said all along. I’m all for grass fields for player safety, but it’s not as simple as summer making it out to be. Can it be done? In this day and age, it’s hard to believe that it couldn’t. But it’s not perfect. There are a lot of factors and if the NFLPA wants it, make it a focal point of the next collective bargaining agreement and sit out if the owners don’t agree,” noted Stapleton on X, formerly Twitter.

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle made headlines when he was in attendance at a World Cup match at MetLife Stadium and publicly pined for the NFL to keep the grass. MetLife Stadium in particular has gotten an ugly reputation for causing player injuries due to poor field conditions over the years.
However, as Stapleton pointed out, “This is not an issue where the solution is going to be a photo barrage of the World Cup over a couple days make billionaires budge.”
The Giants’ season is slated to get underway on September 13 vs the Dallas Cowboys at home.
