As far as unlikely pet friendships go, it never gets old seeing a big dog fall head over heels for a tiny kitten. This is exactly what happened when a rescue German Shepherd, Bear, met his new little buddy, an itty-bitty Orange Kitten, and when the two are together, it's the cutest mayhem you'll ever see.
This patient and gentle German Shepherd was made for the role of big brother, and his little feline buddy is so lucky to have him. The adorable Orange Kitten was adopted 3 weeks ago for Mom, but Bear decided that the baby was his, and he's been an affectionate, playful, patient companion to the kitty ever since.
"Every day it gets a little cuter and a little more comedic and a whole lot more wild," the post is captioned. "Not sure I could love anything more than a dog-cat bestie duo. And now we have one."
Bear isn't just good with the kitten. He came along three years ago after the family suddenly lost their soul dog, Riggs, and his transformation story is nothing short of incredible.

Three days after the tragic loss, Bear came along. After his previous pet parent was unsuccessful in rehoming him, he was almost sent to the shelter and likely euthanized. His new family met him in the nick of time and took him in. However, this sweet boy had a lot of anxiety from trauma.
As Mom, Teegan, noted in a previous post, the poor German Shepherd (who was less than a year old at the time) spent 20 hours a day in a kennel, had never seen another animal or child, and howled nonstop. With patience, love, and training, Bear transformed into the best boy ever.
Now, he's obsessed with all the homestead animals, has his very own kitten bestie, and has learned how it feels to love and be loved.
Why German Shepherds Are So Gentle With Kittens
Germans Shepherds have the special sauce that makes them an ideal companion for kids and kittens alike. Because of their strong protective and herding instincts, these pups have a tendency to nurture or keep watch over those they love.
All dogs do best with a foundation of solid training, but when an incredibly smart GSD is raised in a loving home with other pets or children, and boundaries are in place for safety reasons, these pups learn to understand that small kittens are other smaller family members who also need to be protected.
Bear's family may have saved him, but it's clear he saved them, too. Now that he's got his little Orange Cat by his side, life is feeling pretty good, and he deserves every second of it.
