A former Friends star has shared devastating family news with fans. Lauren Tom, who played Julie in the iconic ’90s television series, took to social media to reveal “tough news” about her daughter, Ellie, 25.

In an Instagram post shared on July 19, Tom wrote that Ellie is “battling osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and my family and I are doing everything we can to aid in her healing.”

Tom added that throughout this ordeal, she’s been leaning into a quote from Fred Rogers, of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. She referenced Rogers talking about finding “the helpers” when things are scary. “You will always find people who are helping,” Rogers infamously said.

“Ellie is an amazing, deep, sensitive, wise, strong, brave, intelligent, and funny soul. Beautiful inside and out,” Tom gushed of her daughter.

In the caption of her post, Tom also wrote that the family has a “long journey ahead of us” as Ellie navigates treatments. She asked, “Would you be so kind to keep Ellie in your prayers for a complete recovery?”

She also said she hoped supporters would leave encouraging messages for Ellie, believing that words of kindness and hope could help lift her daughter’s spirits during treatment.

The Instagram post received over 540 comments from supporters. Several fans shared their own family’s stories of beating osteosarcoma, and others offered love and prayers.

Almost 24 hours after initially sharing the post, Tom added a comment.

“Thank you all so much for this overwhelming outpouring of love, support, and prayers,” she wrote. She continued, “We have read each comment, and are filled with gratitude that you are holding us in your hearts.”

Several fellow entertainment colleagues also commented on the post to signal their support.

Men in Trees star James Tupper wrote, “Oh yes. Saying a prayer for healing right now. Sending love!!”

ER alum Ming-Na Wen added, “Praying for Ellie and keeping all of your family in our thoughts and prayers, sis! Love you!”

Others who commented included Futurama’s John DiMaggio, Andi Mack, NCIS, and Shrinking star Lilan Bowden, and That ’70s Show alum Kurtwood Smith.

In addition to her role on Friends, Tom has had roles in dozens of other television shows and animated series.

She played Celia Mack in the Disney series Andi Mack, and she portrayed Mai Washington in the series Men in Trees. Tom has also been the voice of Min Souphanousinphone in King of the Hill as well as Amy Wong in Futurama.
