There are unwritten codes that govern any friendship, and near the top of the list is the straightforward issue of being fair about money. When you head out for a meal with your friends, the baseline expectation is that everyone covers their own portion. It’s a core expression of mutual respect.

Yet, one young woman recently went online to recount an experience that shows not everybody has learned this elementary rule of social conduct, and it ultimately led to a deeply awkward showdown over who owed what at dinner.

The Incident

A 20-year-old university student shared that she regularly goes out to eat with her friend groups. With one particular circle, the process is completely effortless. Someone covers the total bill, and everyone else promptly transfers their exact portion-including tax and tip-through a payment app. It’s a system rooted in mutual consideration and trust, exactly as things ought to work.

The problems started when she began going to dinner with two different friends, “Rory” and “Lane.” Each time the check landed on the table, the young woman noticed an uncomfortable pattern. Her friends would abruptly become fascinated with absolutely anything except the bill, leaving her with no choice but to hand over her card.

The aggravation went even further than that. Getting reimbursed would drag on for weeks, and only after she sent repeated follow-up messages. Making matters worse, when the money did eventually come through, it was never the correct amount. They routinely “forgot” to account for tax and tip and would even round their portions down.

After getting shortchanged on three separate occasions, she reached her breaking point. She quietly stopped including them in any restaurant plans. When they finally asked her about it, she didn’t sugarcoat it. She told them, “it’s really annoying splitting bills with them and being stingy and I just prefer to avoid that.”

Rather than offering a genuine apology, they brushed off her concerns, claiming she was “making a big deal out of nothing” before proceeding to give her the silent treatment. The fact that her family happens to be financially comfortable, something her friends were well aware of, apparently made her an easy mark-despite the fact that she holds a campus job and manages her money with care.

The Internet Reacts

The online response was overwhelmingly supportive of the young woman, though commenters offered a range of perspectives on how the situation could have been handled. The reactions generally fell into a few key categories.

First came the “Absolutely Not” Crowd, who were outraged on her behalf. They viewed the friends’ behavior as a flagrant and disrespectful exploitation of their friend’s assumed wealth. One commenter summed it up directly: “They’re upset that the money train stopped running.”

Someone else echoed that sentiment, writing, “Sounds to me like they’re taking advantage of you cause they think that since you come from money then you can afford it and should just suck it up.” This group firmly believed the woman was justified in cutting them out of dining plans altogether.

Next was the “Practical Solutions” Crowd. These commenters felt the issue, while maddening, had a straightforward resolution that might have preserved the friendships. The most common suggestion was to request individual checks right from the start. “Literally just split the check. ‘We’re all separate.’ Job done,” one person recommended.

Someone else chimed in, “I have a friend who is like this. When we make plans to meet up for lunch, I always get to the restaurant first and ask the server if we can have separate checks.” For this group, eliminating the shared bill scenario entirely would have prevented the whole ordeal from happening.

Lastly, there was the “Tough Love” Crowd, who felt a more confrontational, real-time approach was called for. They contended that the young woman was inadvertently enabling the behavior by continuing to foot the bill. One commenter proposed a pointed reply for the next time they wanted to go out: “If it’s not such a big deal to them then one of them can pay with their credit card and you’ll Venmo her your share.”

Another took an even firmer stance, saying that if she ever dined with them again and they couldn’t handle their own portion on a separate check, it should be “too bad, so sad. Don’t pay for theirs.” This camp was all about establishing clear, immediate boundaries.

The Etiquette Verdict

Let’s make one thing absolutely clear: these friends were behaving deplorably. Exploiting a friend’s generosity-or their assumed financial standing-represents a significant violation of trust and basic manners. While requesting separate checks is always a smart move in group settings, nobody should have to babysit their friends’ financial obligations.

The fundamental rule of eating out with others is uncomplicated: cover what you ordered, pay your fair share of the tax, and always, always tip appropriately. Doing anything less sends a clear message to both your friend and the server that you don’t value them.

Your Thoughts

This scenario raises a tough question about navigating the tricky intersection of modern friendships and finances. Was the young woman right to exclude her friends from restaurant outings, or should she have taken a more upfront approach from the beginning by requesting separate checks?
