The Cleveland Guardians welcomed José Ramírez back to the active roster Wednesday, activating the seven-time All-Star from the 10-day injured list ahead of their game against the Minnesota Twins. In a corresponding move, Cleveland optioned rookie outfielder Kahlil Watson to Triple-A Columbus.
Rather than sending Ramírez on a minor league rehab assignment, manager Stephen Vogt inserted him directly into the starting lineup, batting second against Minnesota. The decision gives Cleveland its franchise cornerstone back as the American League Central race tightens.
Ramírez had been sidelined since mid-June after fracturing the hamate bone in his left hand. He underwent surgery on June 16 and returned wearing custom-padded batting gloves designed to protect the repaired hand.
Before the injury, Ramírez appeared in 72 games, batting .239 with a .339 on-base percentage and .418 slugging percentage. The 33-year-old added 10 home runs, 33 RBIs and 24 stolen bases, continuing to impact games with both his power and speed.
The Guardians remained competitive during his absence, posting a 15-15 record while trying to keep pace in one of baseball's closest division races. His return provides an immediate boost to the middle of Cleveland's lineup for the second half.
Cleveland enters Wednesday at 54-48, one game behind the first-place Chicago White Sox in the American League Central. The Minnesota Twins sit third at 49-53, making the series an important opportunity for the Guardians to gain ground.
Getting Ramírez back without requiring a rehab assignment gives Cleveland one of the league's top infielders at a crucial point in the season. His return strengthens the lineup as the Guardians continue their push toward the postseason ahead of the trade deadline.
