In the eyes of video game fans, myself included, video games are rarely adapted well; oftentimes, fan-favorite characters, storylines, settings, and other key elements from the video games they're based on are changed during the adaptation process in ways that make the finished product feel more like a sorry excuse for a cash grab — looking at you Halo — rather than a true product of inspiration and appreciation. Amazon's Fallout show, on the other hand, is a great example of how to do a video game adaptation right.
Not every adaptation from video game to movie or TV has to be a 1:1 replica — sometimes, if the creators truly know their source material well enough, an adaptation can even introduce entirely new characters and tell an original story, simply placing them in the well-known world of its source material, and have it work ... possibly even better than if they had done a simple retelling. The creators of Fallout did just that, and it paid off. With two successful seasons under its belt and a third on the way, Fallout has continued to set the stage for future video game adaptations, proving that not only can they be done in a way that pleases both fans and casual viewers, they're also a medium worth exploring for big-name stars, like Steve Buscemi, who will be joining the cast of the highly-anticipated Far Cry adaptation coming soon.
'Fallout' Has Left Big Shoes for 'Far Cry' to Fill
Since its debut, Fallout has earned 17 Primetime Emmy nominations and two wins (one for Outstanding Music Supervision and one for Outstanding Emerging Media Program), along with a variety of other nominations and awards, and is widely considered a massive video game adaptation success by both critics and viewers alike. Ella Purnell as the show's main character, Lucy, a wandering vault dweller in search of her father, is fantastic, but it's Walter Goggins as The Ghoul, a bounty hunter thirsty for revenge, who truly steals the show. Between its writing, music, cinematography, and performances, Fallout is undoubtedly a success all around ... which means it will take some real effort for FX's Far Cry adaptation to compete.
Announced in Nov. 2025, the Far Cry TV show will be produced by long-time FX producers Rob Mac, creator of the popular sitcom It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Noah Hawley, creator of the anthology series Fargo. Mac will also be starring in the series alongside Lizzy Caplan, best known for her role as Janis Ian in Mean Girls or Virginia Johnson in Master of Sex, and — most recently announced — the legendary Steve Buscemi. The show will follow a format similar to that of the video game series, meaning each season will feature a new setting, story, and cast of characters, the same way each game does, which is a point of excitement for producer Hawley, as stated in an interview with Ubisoft, Far Cry's development studio.
"What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it's an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme. To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true. I'm excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen."
Though it's unknown at this time if the series will be retelling stories from the games or creating entirely new ones, I personally am holding out hope that elements from Far Cry 5 could be involved somehow. Whether it's a full remake of the game, or just the use of Joseph Seed and the Seed family, I think there are plenty of amazing pieces from that story that could easily translate to the television screen and make for an exciting watch. Because the project is still in early development at the time of this article's publication, meaning there's no official release date yet, there's plenty of time for more information to be released regarding its plot and characters, and plenty of room for even more stars to join this already promising cast.
