Five-year-old boy dies in swimming pool near Rome

(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 22 - A five-year-old boy is dead after suddenly feeling ill on Wednesday while in a municipal swimming pool with other children during a summer camp in Monterotondo, near Rome, sources said. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. It is the latest in a series of fatal accidents at swimming pools involving children in Italy, the most recent regarding a 11-year-old girl who died after being sucked into a drain at a beach-club pool on the Ligurian Riviera. Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci said at the time that the girl was the fifth minor to have died in a swimming pool in Italy in the last three months and announced the government would take measures to boost safety at public and private pools. Italy is also still mourning a Moroccan girl who drowned in Lake Como on Tuesday while on holiday with her parents. (ANSA).
