The Rainbow 3 Fire broke out for unknown reasons at about 10 a.m. Wednesday along Rainbow Crest Road in the unincorporated Rainbow community.

A wildfire erupted Wednesday in steep, rocky terrain in the rural northeastern reaches of the San Diego area, blackening dozens of open acres and burning dangerously near homes as ground and airborne crews worked to subdue the flames.

The Rainbow 3 Fire broke out for unknown reasons at about 10 a.m. Wednesday along Rainbow Crest Road in the unincorporated Rainbow community, near Mordigan Lane and north of State Route 76.

“Rainbow 3 Fire is currently 50 acres and burning at a moderate rate of spread,” Cal Fire said late Wednesday morning. “The fire is burning in steep and rocky terrain, mostly influenced by topography. Structures are still threatened.”

Within 90 minutes, the flames had spread over roughly 50 acres, the state agency said.

A temporary shelter was available for the displaced at Seventh Day Adventist Church on Old Highway 395 in Fallbrook.

By shortly after 11 a.m., ground crews and personnel aboard air tankers and water-dropping helicopters were making good progress toward gaining control of the blaze, Cal Fire Capt. Mike Cornette said.
