Fifth Third Bank cuts more jobs amid merger with Comerica Bank

Fifth Third Bank is cutting 234 jobs in Auburn Hills as it continues to consolidate following its Comerica merger.

Fifth Third Bank is laying off 234 employees at a former Comerica Bank operations center in Auburn Hills, bringing the company's Michigan job cuts tied to the merger to more than 700.

The permanent layoffs are set for a center at 3701 Hamlin Road, the former operations site for Dallas-based Comerica Bank, according to a state WARN filing. The filing did not specify which roles would be slashed, but the cuts will be completed by Sept. 11.

"We consistently review our operations to ensure we're organized for long-term growth and sustainable profitability," said a Fifth Third representative said in a statement. "That means aligning staffing with future business needs and creating meaningful opportunities for our teammates in the process. Decisions like these are never easy but position us to deliver more value for our customers, communities and shareholders. We're committed to treating every impacted colleague with respect and providing support throughout the transition."

The Auburn Hills layoffs follow Fifth Third's announcement in May that it would lay off 502 employees at Comerica's former Great Lakes Campus in Farmington Hills between July and November.

That figure does not include layoffs Comerica made as its merger with Fifth Third neared completion in February; those cuts affected corporate roles in Michigan and other states, according to LinkedIn posts.

The layoffs stem from Fifth Third Bancorp's acquisition of Comerica, a $10.9 billion deal that created the nation's ninth-largest bank with about $290 billion in assets. When the merger was announced, Fifth Third said it was committed to maintaining the Farmington Hills campus, which opened in 2024 and was Comerica's largest corporate office, with nearly 2,000 employees.

In March, Fifth Third announced that One Campus Martius in downtown Detroit, owned by Dan Gilbert, would serve as its Michigan headquarters. The company's regional footprint also includes offices in Birmingham, at One Woodward, and the Auburn Hills operations center.

"Michigan remains one of our most important markets, and the Detroit metro area is one of five major employment hubs for the new Fifth Third," the Fifth Third representative said. "Earlier this year we named downtown Detroit our Michigan headquarters — a decision that reflects our long-term commitment to Michigan customers, teammates, and communities."

Branch consolidation is also underway. Fifth Third is closing 75 Michigan branches this summer, 55 of them former Comerica locations and 20 Fifth Third locations. The closures are expected to be completed by Labor Day, Sept. 7.

Steve Davis, Fifth Third's Michigan region president, has said the overlap in branch footprints, including cases where two branches shared a parking lot, made consolidation necessary.

Following the closures, Michigan will have 227 combined branches, with 116 in Macomb, Oakland, Wayne and Washtenaw counties. Fifth Third has said some employees at closing branches will be offered transfers or the chance to apply for other positions.
