Disney is being brutal, and Pixar is facing the biggest heartbreak.
Despite having a major success with Toy Story 5, Disney's latest reported layoffs, as confirmed by TheWrap, have seemingly hit Pixar the hardest. A Disney spokesperson stated, "These changes are part of our continual evaluation of how we manage resources and reinvest across the company as our industry continues to evolve." This is the largest round of Pixar layoffs in two years after the release of Inside Out 2.
Toy Story 5 has just grossed $957 million at the global box office, with reports it will reach the stars and hit well over $1 billion after its theatrical run. Inside Out 2 was also a major success for Pixar, grossing over $1.69 billion globally, but it was also the year when many Pixar staffers were shown the door by Disney. The 2024 layoffs were reportedly due to Disney+ needing fewer animated products from the studio.
However, this new round of layoffs is reportedly being blamed on the underperformance of Hoppers, which grossed $389 million worldwide on a budget of $150 million. New Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro has overseen many layoffs since he took the role, including a lot of Marvel Studios' art department, and in a memo from April stated:
"Over the past several months, we have looked at ways in which we can streamline our operations in various parts of the company to ensure we deliver the world-class creativity and innovation our fans value and expect from Disney. Given the fast-moving pace of our industries, this requires us to constantly assess how to foster a more agile and technologically-enabled workforce to meet tomorrow’s needs. As a result, we will be eliminating roles in some parts of the company and have begun notifying impacted employees."
There are many Disney releases already planned with Pixar creating Gatto, Incredibles 3, and so many more. However, due to the recent layoffs, it's unclear how these projects will be impacted and potentially future sequels. ESPN, Disney Entertainment Television and Disney Studios have all been impacted, with National Geographic said to also be hit incredibly hard.
At the time of writing, D'Amaro and Disney have yet to confirm the news and release a statement regarding the shocking layoffs as Pixar staffers worry about their futures while watching Toy Story 5 become one of the year's biggest releases in theaters.
