Cicero, N.Y. – FedEx is laying off more than half the workers at six facilities across New York, including all 22 employees at a site near Syracuse that closed at the end of June.

The delivery service disclosed the 164 personnel cuts in notices filed with the state Department of Labor under New York’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act.

The notices said the layoffs will begin Aug. 3 and will be completed on Aug. 28, though some have already occurred.

These are the six facilities and the number of layoffs at each:

  • 6313 Running Ridge Road, Cicero (22 workers)
  • 299 Cayuga Road, Cheektowaga (36 workers)
  • 115 Dry Road, Oriskany (31 workers)
  • 2123 Link Drive, Binghamton (31 workers)
  • 358 Sing Sing Road, Horseheads (32 workers)
  • 747 Warren Road, Ithaca (12 workers)

All but the Cheektowaga facility are closing or have already closed.

In total, 293 people worked at the facilities before the layoffs.

In addition, FedEx laid off 43 of the 120 people working at a facility at 590 Broadway in Menands, near Albany, in January.

The company confirmed in May that it was planning to close facilities across portions of Upstate New York this summer, but it did not say at the time how many workers would lose their jobs.

The cuts are part of a company-wide transformation dubbed Network 2.0 that FedEx announced in 2022 to streamline how it picks up, transports and delivers packages across the U.S. and Canada.

As part of the new strategy, FedEx said it will have a single vehicle pick up and deliver packages in neighborhoods rather than having multiple vans from FedEx Express and FedEx Ground doing the job.

“This initiative aims to simplify service with a ‘one van, one neighborhood’ model, enhancing efficiency and customer experience,” David Westrick, a spokesperson for the company, said in an emailed statement to syracuse.com | The Post-Standard on Monday.

He said the company is offering job placement assistance, relocation aid and severance to the affected employees. Some will be offered other roles within the company, he said.

The company has said it expects to “optimize” more than 900 facilities nationwide and close about 475 locations by the end of 2027, representing a 30% reduction in its facilities.

Customers who have used the Cicero location may instead drop off packages at 628 S. Main St. in North Syracuse, the company said.
