The Fever’s 123-88 win against the short-handed Sun was an offensive masterclass. Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, and Kelsey Mitchell combined for 72 points—almost as many as all Sun players combined. As a team, Indiana shot 62% from the field and 50% from deep and won the battle in the paint 64-50.
Still, the game wasn’t all great. Clark picked up her seventh technical foul of the season late in the third quarter when she was jawing at Saniya Rivers, who was also called for a technical foul. Clark is now just one game away from a suspension, and after the eighth technical foul, every other one warrants a new suspension.
Playing games without Clark is anything but ideal for the Fever, but at this point they just have to accept that she will probably be suspended for at least one game. There are still seventeen games left in the season, and, while Clark is aware of what a suspension would mean for her team, she doesn’t seem ready to make any serious changes quite yet.
“That intensity and fire is what makes me me, but also knowing my team needs me and finding a good balance of that,” Clark said in the postgame media availability. “But I don’t think I’m going to be playing with that in the back of my head. I think that might hinder my play a bit.”
Fortunately, the Fever have experience playing without Clark
After an injury-plagued 2025 season and some absences this year, Clark’s teammates know how to play and survive without her. Kelsey Mitchell can step up as an unstoppable scorer, and Tyasha Harris has proven that she’s capable of stepping into a bigger role when Clark is out. Since she’s been getting more minutes, Harris has been an efficient scorer and a reliable playmaker.
So, the Fever can win if Clark picks up her eighth technical foul and a suspension, but it’s still not a great situation to be in with one of your star players. Missing time because of injuries is one thing, but arguing with the refs (which was not the cause for this latest technical foul but many others) is something Clark can very much control.
Who else is in danger of a suspension for technical fouls?
Currently, Clark and Angel Reese are the only players with seven technical fouls and a suspension waiting for them if they pick up another one. This isn’t new territory for Reese, who was already suspended for picking up her eighth technical foul last season with the Sky. Kahleah Copper is also close with six.
No one else is in any imminent danger of getting a suspension quite yet, but Diamond Miller, Natasha Cloud, Marina Mabrey, and Alyssa Thomas are going into the All-Star break halfway there.
