The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that Taylor Fresh Foods is recalling iceberg lettuce that was sourced from Mexico and sold across the U.S. market. The iceberg lettuce has the potential to be contaminated with Cyclospora, a parasite that causes explosive diarrhea, among other symptoms. The voluntary recall was announced by Taylor Farms on July 17 and published by the FDA on July 18.
The recalled lettuce products were not sold under the Taylor Farms brand and are primarily food service products, but the recall does include two consumer-facing retail products: bagged iceberg salad and shredded iceberg lettuce sold under the Marketside brand exclusively in Walmart stores.
This recall follows a multistate outbreak of Cyclospora infections that has sickened thousands. On July 17, the outbreak. The same day, Taco Bell announced it had completed removal of all affected Taylor Farms lettuce from its restaurants.
On July 19, the FDA reported that a July 18 positive sample of Taylor Farms lettuce was concluded to be a false positive. However, the recall stands, and the FDA still advises consumers, restaurants, and retailers that purchased or received the recalled iceberg lettuce distributed by Taylor Fresh Foods not to consume it.
At this time, the FDA and CDC investigations into the Cyclospora outbreak are ongoing.
How To Identify the Recalled Lettuce
The recalled iceberg lettuce was distributed June 29 through July 16 to 27 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin.
Most of the recalled products are not consumer-facing and were distributed through food service channels, not in retail locations. However, two Walmart retail products have been recalled:
- Marketside Iceberg Salad 12-ounce or 24-ounce sold at Walmart with “Best if Used By” dates between July 18, 2026 and Aug. 3, 2026.
- Marketside Shredded Lettuce 8-ounce or 16-ounce sold at Walmart with “Best if Used By” dates between July 18, 2026 and Aug. 3, 2026.
According to Walmart, the Marketside products were sold in select Walmart stores in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia. What To Do if You Have the Recalled Iceberg Lettuce
At this time, the FDA advises consumers who have any of the recalled iceberg lettuce to discard it immediately. Do not consume it. Instead, return it to the original place of purchase for a refund.
The most common symptoms of a Cyclospora infection are diarrhea and frequent bowel movements; however, other common symptoms include loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue. According to the CDC, symptoms may appear as soon as two days after consuming the affected food, but may take up to two weeks to appear.
