- The movie follows a family whose home has been invaded by a paranormal entity named “Other Mommy”
- Other Mommy will hit theaters on Oct. 9, 2026
Other Mommy has already succeeded in terrifying its audience after the release of its first trailer on July 21.
The film, which is due in theaters on Oct. 9, follows a family whose home has been invaded by a paranormal entity named “Other Mommy.” Jessica Chastain stars in the horror movie as both mom Ursula and her monster doppelgänger. In her dual role, Chastain switches seamlessly between her two personas while the rest of the family struggles to keep track of who’s who.
Other Mommy is an adaptation of Josh Malerman’s 2024 novel, Incidents Around the House. In an interview with The AU Review, director Rob Savage said that the story’s way of “disrupting the usual horror rhythms” was a key selling point in deciding to adapt Malerman’s work.
“You normally expect things to happen in certain places at certain junctures in the movie,” he explained. “This movie — like the book — kind of upends that at every turn.”
Other Mommy also marks Chastain’s return to the horror genre following her role in 2019’s It: Chapter Two.
Here’s everything to know about Other Mommy, including who else is starring alongside Chastain and what happens in the movie’s terrifying trailer.
What is Other Mommy About?
Other Mommy follows a family whose home has been invaded by a paranormal entity that daughter Bela (Arabella Olivia Clark) has named “Other Mommy.”
The monster bears an uncanny resemblance to Ursula and is not supposed to leave Bela’s room. “Other Mommy” does leave Bela’s room, however, and subsequently begins tormenting the family.
An official synopsis for the movie describes Other Mommy as “a terrifying trip into the darkening world of a young girl, Bela, who forms a relationship with a sinister entity in her home who looks uncannily like her own mother.”
Who is in the Other Mommy cast?
Chastain stars in Other Mommy as both Bela’s mom Ursula and her terrifying doppelgänger. The film marks Chastain’s return to the horror genre after having starred in 2013’s Mama and 2019’s It: Chapter Two.
Bela is played by The Housemaid actress Clark; her dad, Russ, is played by Dying for Sex star Jay Duplass. Supporting actors include Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed and Karen Allen, who plays Bela’s grandmother Ruth.
Who is directing Other Mommy?
Savage, who most recently directed an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Boogeyman, is directing Other Mommy. Savage is also known for his supernatural horror film Host.
“It’s an incredibly emotional movie, as well as a terrifying one,” Savage told The AU Review of Other Mommy in July 2026. “Being able to switch between those two modes so seamlessly was when we knew the movie was going to work.”
Is there a trailer for Other Mommy?
The first trailer for Other Mommy gave viewers quite the shock when it arrived on July 21.
The trailer opens with Ursula arriving home and cooking Bela lunch. As Ursula reminisces on “what it was like to be one person” while pregnant with Bela, the pasta she put on the stove begins to burn. Bela realizes that the woman standing before her isn’t Ursula at all, but rather her “Other Mommy.” The monster then asks Bela, “Can I go into your heart?” to which Bela replies, “You said you wouldn’t leave my room.”
Russ runs in as the kitchen fills with smoke and throws the pot of burning pasta in the sink. He begins questioning his daughter, at which point he spots “Other Mommy” hiding under the table with her limbs contorted like a spider. Appropriately terrified, Russ jumps backward, shattering the window.
The rest of the trailer shows glimpses of the entity’s haunting presence in the family’s home. Unable to distinguish between the monster and her real mother, Bela becomes increasingly disturbed, as do Russ and Ursula.
When will Other Mommy be released?
Other Mommy will hit theaters on Oct. 9, 2026.
