Charlize Theron is facing backlash after making comments about co-star Matt Damon’s physical transformation while promoting The Odyssey.
The Oscar-winning actress, who stars as Calypso opposite Damon’s Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, spoke openly about the actor’s appearance during a recent interview. While discussing Damon’s preparation for the role, Theron admitted she was impressed by his transformation.
“I’ve seen him without all of that suit on. He’s incredible. Incredible,” she told Entertainment Tonight. Theron then went further, joking that she found herself paying close attention to more than just his performance on set for The Odyssey, which just came out this week.

“I’m like staring at him weirdly. I’m looking at his a– right now. I shouldn’t do that! That’s just wrong,” she said with a laugh. “He looked amazing, yes.”
The remarks sparked criticism online, with some calling them inappropriate given Damon has been married to his wife, Luciana Barroso, since 2005. Others, however, others saw the comment as harmless and in line with Theron’s typically candid personality.
The pair are not new collaborators. Theron and Damon previously starred together in the 2000 film The Legend of Bagger Vance, where they played love interests. Their reunion in The Odyssey marks more than two decades since that project.
Damon’s transformation for the role has been widely discussed, with the actor reportedly dropping from 200 pounds to 167 pounds in preparation for playing the Greek king.
He has spoken openly about the effort required to achieve the look, emphasizing that it was less about aesthetics and more about overall fitness.
“It was more about just getting really, really physically fit, which just really involves changing your diet, just a whole lifestyle change,” he told People. “You have to just be very, very intentional about everything you’re putting in your body.”
The actor also addressed the challenges of maintaining that level of fitness later in life during an appearance on Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast.
“It’s way different to be getting jacked in your 50s. It’s really hard. It’s just a complete, complete lifestyle change,” he said. “Just put your feet on the gas, and that’s it. And that’s the only way to do it and eat a little less, no gluten, which changed my life.”
Damon went on to explain how cutting gluten had a noticeable impact on his health and daily routine.
“I didn’t realize the level to which it was affecting me and affecting my life. It’s completely changed my life these last couple of years of not eating it,” he continued. “It’s a bummer. I’m a big fan of bread and beer, and you know pasta and pizza and all that stuff, but how I feel is just so much better."
