An Ethiopian immigrant was arrested Tuesday after allegedly killing three people following an argument over a $65 apartment parking contract before blaming "the American system" and racism, reports show.
The 30-year-old man, Tsegaab Binessu, had allegedly murdered 25-year-old Nansi Fuentes Zambrano, 56-year-old Dena Silcox and 43-year-old Adam Wilwerding, according to a statement from the Saint Paul police department in Minnesota. The bodies were found in the leasing office of an apartment complex after following reports of gunshots being fired, per the police.
Binessu's roommate called the police as well, saying that Binessu had confessed to him that he had gone to the office to argue about the contract before gunning down the three victims, according to charging documents reviewed by ABC 5.
The roommate said that Binessu wanted to end his parking contract as he had just quit his job as a trucker so that he could enlist in the Navy.
Apartment staffers told police that Binessu had called before the incident to cancel his parking contract; however, he was told that the contract cannot be canceled as he had just recently renewed. Binessu told the staff that he would be coming to the leasing office himself to talk about it in person.
The charges describe surveillance video that shows what appears to be Binessu talking with Silcox and Wilwerding before pulling a gun from under his shirt and shooting the victims with six shots each. The video then shows Binessu walk out of frame before a scream of the youngest victim can be heard, followed by four more gunshots, ABC 5 reported.
Binessu was arrested about 100 miles away from the scene of the crime while driving one of the victims' cars while carrying his passport, Social Security card, his permit to carry a gun, and an empty gun magazine, Fox 9 reported.
Binessu complained to the police about "the American system," blaming it for his divorce after unsuccessfully trying to bring his wife and kids over from Ethiopia. Binessu added that he had been treated unfairly due to his race and immigration history; however, he did not confess to the killing, only admitting that he had entered the office to dispute the contract.
"I was sad, real sad, I lost a good friend," one apartment resident told Fox 9, noting that he had heard the gunshots.
