Before Elvis Presley became known as the "King of Rock and Roll," he was already proving his ability to transform songs into unforgettable hits. One of those tracks, a 1962 release written by three legendary songwriters, became another major milestone in his remarkable career.
"She's Not You" was released on July 17, 1962, with "Just Tell Her Jim Said Hello" appearing as the B-side. The single arrived during one of the most successful periods of Presley’s career, following the massive popularity of songs like "Can’t Help Falling in Love" and "Rock-A-Hula Baby."
The song was written by an impressive trio of hitmakers: Doc Pomus, Mort Shuman and Elvis collaborators Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.
Pomus and Shuman were behind numerous pop and rock classics, while Leiber and Stoller had already helped shape the sound of early rock and roll with hits including "Hound Dog," "Jailhouse Rock" and "Stand By Me" (with Ben E. King).
With that songwriting power behind it, "She’s Not You" quickly became another success for Presley. The song reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and became a Top 10 hit during a time when Presley was dominating both radio and record sales.
The track also showcased a different side of Presley’s artistry. While many fans remember his biggest rock and roll anthems, "She’s Not You" leaned into a smoother pop sound, highlighting his ability to deliver emotional ballads and romantic songs just as effectively as his high-energy performances.
The release came as Presley was balancing his music career with his growing Hollywood presence. By 1962, he had become one of the biggest entertainers in the world, with movie roles and chart-topping singles making him a constant presence in popular culture.
