(The Hill) — Elon Musk took aim at Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of “The Odyssey,” which was released earlier this month, for its historical inaccuracy.
In the lead up to the movie’s release, Musk remained critical over its lack of Greek representation in the cast. He wrote on the social platform X in May that “Chris Nolan is an anti-White racist,” for casting Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra.
Previous posts claim the director has “grossly insulted the Greek people” by not including Greek actors. “Shame on him” for doing so, Musk added.
In his latest post, Musk reposted a three-minute clip of a trailer generated by Grok, the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot made by Musk’s xAI, and claimed the artificial intelligence will be able to recreate the full-length movie that is “true to the art of Homer.”
Musk’s post has already received over 8 million views as of Wednesday evening and is drawing controversy.
Scholars have defended Nolan’s casting choices. Daniel Mendelsohn, who previously translated “The Odyssey,” said that he noticed Matt Damon’s casting did not cause as much controversy despite the actor not being Greek.
Despite backlash and a planned conservative “boycott” over the film, Nolan’s “The Odyssey” defied its projections to make $264.1 million globally in just its opening weekend — making it Nolan’s biggest opening to date. The opening weekend box office total set many records, as have the days following its release.
On Monday, the epic earned Universal’s fifth highest-grossing Monday for a film, earning an additional $18.67 million, per Deadline. This also marks the highest-grossing Monday at the box office this year so far. Then, “The Odyssey” earned another $21.4 million on Tuesday, breaking a Nolan Tuesday earnings record, in addition to becoming the second-best Tuesday box office of the year, after “Toy Story 5.”
Additionally, despite some conservative American backlash to the lack of Greeks in the film, “The Odyssey,” had what Greek news outlet Greek Reporter called a “remarkable” opening weekend, becoming one of the biggest box office earners in that country in many years.
While it’s too soon to say whether Musk’s AI film will reach the heights set by Nolan’s critically acclaimed 13th film, the world has already gotten a taste of the Grok-produced trailer for the “film.”
The Grok Imagine trailer notably replaces the title character and Calypso with AI-generated stand-ins. The original user who posted the clip also shared some of the prompts to create the trailer, like reimagining Calypso’s character to be “ageless” with a “soft Greek accent.
Reception to the trailer was mixed, with many X users dubbing it “AI slop,” and many others pointing out that the “historically accurate” trailer is spoken in English, not Ancient Greek.
