Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) endorsed Abdul El-Sayed for Senate in Michigan, giving the progressive a boost in a tight race against Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.) ahead of the state’s August 4 Democratic primary.
In a video accompanying the endorsement, Warren praised El-Sayed for spurning corporate donors.
While Al-Sayed has raised more than double that of Stevens, the former Wayne County health director has been overwhelmed by nearly $30 million in outside spending on Stevens’ behalf, according to Bridge Michigan, a nonpartisan, nonprofit news source.

“Abdul is the only candidate in this race not taking corporate money and he’s fighting to get money out of politics altogether,” Warren said. “Abdul studied to be a doctor and he’s fighting for every single American to have affordable, high quality healthcare.”
The Massachusetts lawmaker also highlighted El-Sayed’s pro-union views and endorsement from the United Auto Workers.
“Michiganders deserve a senator who will fight for you, not for special interests running millions of dollars in TV ads to buy this seat,” she said. “And make no mistake, Abdul is the only candidate in this race who can build the grassroots movement needed to win in November.”
