President Donald Trump mixed some odd metaphors Tuesday while responding to a question about the ongoing quagmire in Iran, telling reporters the former Iranian leadership was “evil” because they killed young kids “like candy.”

Iran responded to widespread protests against its hardline regime earlier this year by brutally massacring its own people; estimates range from a few thousand to tens of thousands. U.S. and Israeli forces assassinated Iran’s top leaders weeks later.

“Young kids. They kill ‘em. They kill ‘em like they’re … like they’re … uhh … candy,” Trump said. “It’s crazy what they do. They treat them so badly. They’re just killing people at random and nobody talks about it.” (The violence with which Iran snuffed out the protest movement was covered extensively in the news media.)

On U.S. soil, however, Trump is notably hostile to protesters who stand against him. In his first administration, he went so far as to ask deputies why they couldn’t “just shoot” civil rights protesters, according to Trump’s Defense Secretary at the time, Mark Esper.

“Can’t you just shoot them?” Trump reportedly asked. “Just shoot them in the legs or something?”
