Edwardsville aldermen voted 6-0 during the July 21 City Council meeting to approve eight historic landmarks to be recognized on plaques at a monument in Goshen Commons. Alderman Andrea Miracle abstained.
“The Historic Preservation Commission has identified and recommended eight locations. Tonight, we are voting only on the locations, not the content, because we do not yet have a final plaque design,” Alderman Elizabeth Grant explained.
The monument will display plaques educating visitors about prominent historic landmarks in the community.
The approved locations are LeClaire Academy, Nickel Plate Station, the 1820 Colonel Benjamin Stephenson House, Edwardsville Public Library, West End Service Station, Hadley House, Wildey Theatre and the Madison County Courthouse.
The Kriege family is funding the monument, with the Edwardsville Community Foundation and Historic Preservation Commission assisting with coordination.
Aldermen also voted 7-0 to purchase an outdoor LED display from CTI for $55,034.44. The display will measure 5 meters by 4.5 meters, or about 16 feet, 5 inches by 14 feet, 9 inches.
“It’s going to have a big display similar to the size of the Wildey screen. We will be able to hopefully show sporting events, maybe cartoons and movie nights. There are a lot of plans we still have to work through,” Grant said.
New trash contract approved
A new long-term waste contract will bring annual rate increases for Edwardsville residents while maintaining weekly trash and yard waste collection.
Aldermen voted 7-0 to approve the contract with Republic Services. It takes effect Aug. 1 and runs through April 30, 2032.
The initial residential rate will be $23.43 per month. The rate will increase to $25.23 on May 1, 2027, followed by $26.73 in 2028, $28.23 in 2029, $29.73 in 2030 and $31.23 in 2031.
Other action
Aldermen approved the purchase of several budgeted items by 7-0 votes:
- Holmatro extrication tools for $43,368.40 through a sole-source purchase
- A 2027 Ford F-450 and associated equipment from Pritchard Commercial for $111,050.48
- A Ford F-350 and associated equipment from Pritchard Commercial for $60,568.24
- A 2027 Gator XUV 845M from Deere & Co. for $22,139.27
