An Eastlake couple’s colorful home garden, tended for nearly 50 years, earned garden of the month recognition from the Spirit of the Woods Garden Club.

The Spirit of the Woods Garden Club Inc. recently honored Sharon and Martin Marquardt with its garden of the month distinction.

The Marquardts have lived in their house at 54 Fourth St. in Eastlake for 49 years, and Sharon Marquardt's gardens show it.

She has done all the gardening herself over the years. There are several areas with daylilies, ferns, trumpet vine, bee balm, crocosmia, lily of the valley, astilbe and much more.

Marquardt has lilacs and iris from her grandmother. Her gardens are complete with garden art and her children's old sandbox, now filled with nasturtiums.

She spends around two hours a day working in her gardens which include a vegetable garden.

Spirit of the Woods Garden Club meetings are held the second Monday of the month at Oak Grove Hospitality Center, located at 309 Parkdale Ave. in Manistee.

For questions about the club, contact Beth Markowski at 616-401-3387. To nominate a garden for garden of the month, contact Linda Otto at [email protected]
