A 74-year-old man died after a pickup truck driver accused of being under the influence rammed into the back of his car, Coral Springs police said.
The crash happened at a red light on Sample Road near the intersection of Turtle Run Boulevard shortly before 5 p.m. on Monday, July 20.
Joseph Callejo, 42, of Margate, is now charged with vehicular homicide, DUI manslaughter, DUI with damage to property, DUI first offense, reckless driving and DUI failure to submit.
Police identified the victim as Leonard Scibilia of Parkland.
A witness told police that Callejo was driving “at a high rate of speed” in his Toyota Tundra on Sample Road toward a red light, where Scibilia was sitting in his Toyota Highlander, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Then Callejo changed lanes and hit the back of Scibilia’s car, the witness told investigators.
Coral Springs Fire Rescue rushed Scibilia to Broward Health North, where he died of his injuries.
Police said Callejo, who climbed out of his car, smelled like alcohol. They noted “bloodshot watery eyes, incoherent speech, stuttering while he was talking (and) swaying side to side while standing,” according to the affidavit.
Callejo refused to conduct sobriety tests at the scene, take a Breathalyzer test or submit blood, police said. Investigators received a warrant for a blood sample and drew it at the police station before he was transported to a hospital for evaluation out of precaution, according to officers.
He was later booked in Broward jail, where he was being held on no bond as of July 21.
Prosecutors petitioned the judge to not release him before trial, citing a handful of previous cases in which he’s accused of driving with a suspended license or without a valid license.
