FIFA President Gianni Infantino has certainly made a positive impact on Donald Trump.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup concluded with Spain being crowned champions and US President Donald Trump handing out the trophy.
Alongside Trump, FIFA boss Gianni Infantino was present for every moment of not just the World Cup final, but throughout the tournament.
In fact, the two have seemingly gotten very close to each other during the tournament, as evident from Trump’s recent proposal.
Donald Trump suggests Gianni Infantino should be named United Nations’ secretary-general
According to a report by the New York Post, the US President is now lobbying for the FIFA boss to become the next secretary-general of the United Nations.
Why? Well, Trump reportedly loves Infantino’s ability to bring people together.
“[Infantino] is respected by everyone around the world, and recognizes he has a special ability to bring people together,” the Post reported.
The timing couldn’t be better, as the current UN secretary-general, Antonio Guterres, is retiring in December 2026. So, the UN will require a new secretary-general sooner rather than later.
But one may wonder if Trump’s proposal is clouded by Infantino handing the US President FIFA’s inaugural peace prize in December 2025.
Additionally, Infantino’s handling of overturning USMNT star Folarin Balogun’s red card suspension before the hosts’ utter obliteration at the hands of Belgium during the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup makes it even more questionable.
