The 2026 FIFA World Cup is officially over. However, the friendship between USA President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino seems to continue. Just days after the World Cup’s conclusion, Trump teased a new job for Infantino.

Trump, currently serving as President of the United States for the second time, has developed a close bond with Infantino. The two worked together during the World Cup, and Infantino even showered Trump with praise during that period. He had also presented Trump with FIFA’s inaugural Peace Prize at the 2026 World Cup draw in Dec. 2025.

Trump’s bond with Infantino was also evident when he handed out the FIFA Club World Cup trophy to Chelsea in Jul. 2025, and to Spain in the World Cup final on Jul. 19, 2026, at the New York/New Jersey Stadium.

Now, just days after the tournament, The New York Post has exclusively reported that Trump wants Infantino, 56, to become the next secretary-general of the United Nations (UN). Trump believes that Infantino “is respected by everyone around the world, and recognizes he has a special ability to bring people together,” a source told The New York Post.

This year, a new secretary-general will be chosen to succeed Portugal’s António Guterres, who is set to step down in Dec. 2026. Infantino must first gain the approval of the 15-member Security Council, which includes five permanent members with veto power, before being confirmed by the General Assembly to secure the position. While not confirmed yet, the New York Post reported that Infantino’s intent for the job, as well as Trump’s discussion with him about the role, is currently “unclear.”
