The 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an end with Spain defeating Lionel Messi and Argentina, 1-0, in the final on Sunday at LetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The United States of America was the host nation, with the third-place game being held in Miami and matches also being played in Los Angeles, Santa Clara, Seattle, Atlanta, Arlington and others across the country.
Prior to this, the other time the United States was the host country was in 1994. This time around, it was a huge success, and after the final, United States President Donald Trump made it clear he hopes to do it again in the future.
“I had a great idea for [FIFA President] Gianni [Infantino]. I said, ‘You have to do two countries.’ So announce us again next time, and announce another country after that, that’ll take out some of the anger and the shock,” Trump said. “But based on the numbers, we will be requesting it again immediately,” Trump said after the final.
“But I said to take out the shock, you could announce us and maybe then for the next one another, and even another. But we have to do this again, and we have to do it while I’m around. You hear that, Gianni?”
However, Trump’s time as the President of the United States will end in 2028, which means it won’t happen while he is in the Oval Office. The 2030 World Cup will be hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal. Saudi Arabia has landed the honor to host the 2034 World Cup, which means the earliest the United States could host the event isn’t until 2038.
As it stands right now, the chances are high of the United States being named the host nation for 2038, according to Kalshi, a prediction market.
Kalshi has the US with a 33% chance, the highest of all countries, with China at No. 2 at 24% and Australia and New Zealand in third at 20%.
Trump’s appearance at the World Cup final sparked some backlash, and Argentina players even snubbed the President from a handshake following the finish.
Trump also asked FIFA for a review earlier in the tournament when Team USA star Folarin Balogun was handed a red card which then led to a one-game suspension. Balogun’s suspension was lifted, allowing him to play against Belgium in a move that stirred up plenty of controversy.
At the end of the day, the United States has plenty of stadiums and venues available to play matches at a moment’s notice. The final was played at MetLife Stadium, the home to the New York Jets and New York Giants, and SoFi Stadium and Levi’s Stadium are some other massive venues that hosted matches.
Donald Trump will be 92 years old in 2038. Only time will tell if the United States wins the honor to host the 2038 World Cup.
