The Dolphins have managed to take care of their final major piece of financial business ahead of training camp. Linebacker Jordyn Brooks has a new deal in place.
Team and player have agreed to a three-year extension, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports. The pact is worth $51.3MM and includes $35MM in guarantees. Brooks will no longer be a pending free agent, as this agreement will keep him on the books with Miami through 2029.
The 2026 offseason – general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan‘s first in charge – has largely been marked by major roster turnover at the onset of a rebuild. A few key players have received big-money commitments from Miami’s new regime, though. Running back De’Von Achane and center Aaron Brewer in particular were long known to be extension priorities. They each agreed to new contracts, and Brooks has now done the same.
Recent indications suggested Brooks was not looking to reset the top of the market in terms of linebacker compensation on an annual basis. With an AAV of $17.1MM, this pact slots just ahead of Zack Baun ($17MM) and below Azeez Al-Shaair ($18MM) for fourth at the position. Expectations will remain high for sustained top-level production in Brooks’ case ahead of his age-29 season and beyond.
A first-round pick of the Seahawks in 2020, Brooks took over as a starter in his second season and has been among the NFL’s most prolific linebackers since then. Teaming with Bobby Wagner in the middle of Seattle’s defense, the Texas Tech product recorded a career-high and league-leading 184 tackles in 2021, the first of five straight seasons in triple digits. After Brooks put up a personal-best 4.5 sacks in 2023, he joined the Dolphins on a three-year, $26.25MM offer in free agency. He will earn almost double that on his new pact.
The Dolphins were fresh off an 11-win season and a playoff berth when former GM Chris Grier brought in Brooks, but things have gone off the rails since then. Brooks, however, has lived up to his end of the bargain in Miami. He totaled 143 tackles, 11 TFL, six passes defensed and three sacks over 17 starts in 2024. The 6-foot, 240-pounder put together another full season last year, in which he led all Dolphins defenders in snap share for the second straight year.. He led the league in total tackles (183) for the second time, finished atop the the league in solo tackles (99) and earned his first Pro Bowl nod. Brooks notched 13 TFL, three sacks and a forced fumble along the way.
As the subject of trade rumors during the offseason, Brooks expressed uncertainty about whether an extension would come together. Despite receiving plenty of calls, the Dolphins never had interest in dealing Brooks, according to insider Jordan Schultz. Hafley was determined to extend the reigning first-team All-Pro, and he has now accomplished it a week before Dolphins veterans will report to training camp on July 28.
