The good news for Miami is if they're interested in some starting experience, a veteran starter has just become available and may be worth exploring. Veteran safety Jordan Whitehead is officially ready to sign with a team - and Miami should think about it.
The Miami Dolphins should strongly consider signing Jordan Whitehead before training camp
Whitehead’s track record instantly makes him the best available free agent safety on the market. And with him getting cleared for action, he's all systems go for the 2026 season. He was involved in a car accident in January of 2025 that required surgery, but he’s now, officially ready to roll.
Five of his NFL seasons have come in Tampa Bay, with another two with the New York Jets. In both spots, he was a reliable, productive starter. Versatility was a big part of his game, too. Both the Bucs and Jets found opportunities to play him in deep alignments, in the slot, and as an off-ball player in subpackages. Projecting him to some of Jeff Hafley's trends? He's perfect.
The cost could be perfect, too. With Whitehead missing all of last season and coming off a neck injury, it's hard to envision a heavy market for him financially. That's another mark in Miami's favor if they're interested in bidding for his services.
What the Miami Dolphins can offer that many can’t
Let's consider the safety room as constructed. Miami’s secondary features second-year safety Dante Trader Jr., plus journeyman Lonnie Johnson Jr., and a Hafley acolyte in Zayne Anderson. The Dolphins also drafted Texas safety Michael Taaffe in the 5th round of the 2026 NFL Draft. There is plenty of competition heading into camp - but not much in the way of proven commodities. That should be considered a feature if the team were to approach Whitehead, not a bug. The Dolphins can offer something most teams cannot at this stage of the offseason: a legitimate path to starting snaps from Day 1.
A healthy Whitehead would immediately slot into the conversation as a starter. His experience fitting the run, versatility, and his veteran presence in a young secondary all make him a real fit. You don’t often find seven-year starters available for bargain prices just before training camp opens. When you do, it's for a reason. But in the case of Jordan Whitehead, the juice is worth the squeeze provided the cost and guarantees stay down. Miami should find out one way or another.
