Canceled TMNT series confirmed to return in two months

For 42 years, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has remained one of the most enduring and beloved franchises of the 1980s, expanding its legacy through countless comics, live-action films, animated movies, TV shows, and more. One of its most recent additions was Paramount+’s animated series Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. However, despite being generally well-received by fans, the series was canceled after just two seasons. Now, this chapter of TMNT history is returning in September, though not in the way fans might expect.

Paramount+’s Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles first premiered in 2024, but after just two seasons, the animated series was unfortunately canceled. However, Paramount+ still managed to give fans a proper conclusion, with the final episode of Season Two serving as a true ending rather than leaving the series abruptly unfinished. Originally, Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was created as a bridge between the first Mutant Mayhem (2023) movie and its upcoming sequel, which is currently slated for a 2027 release.

The series followed Leo, Raph, Donnie, and Mikey as they faced new threats following the events of Mutant Mayhem and received a generally positive reception from fans. Because of this, the cancellation came as a surprise to many and, as such, was attributed to Paramount’s restructuring and shifting priorities following major corporate changes, rather than lackluster audience response.

The fact that the cancellation wasn't driven by poor fan reception is further supported by the series receiving an IDW Publishing comic series in October 2025, just months before the animated series was canceled in December 2025. Writer Andrew Joustra and artist Louie Joyce created the six-part Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, which also gained a positive fan reception.

Now, nearly a year after the cancellation of the animated series and the end of the comic series, IDW Publishing is bringing back this era of Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in Coastal Chaos, with both Louie Joyce and Andrew Joustra returning.

IDW Publishing’s Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Coastal Chaos is slated to be a limited series, with the first issue set to arrive on September 9, 2026. Based on this synopsis, it appears the series will reintroduce the shark-like alien cyborg bounty hunter Armaggon. Armaggon was first introduced in the Archie Comics TMNT universe and has since become a recurring villain, notably returning in the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series, where he was voiced by iconic Hellboy actor Ron Perlman.

The synopsis for Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Coastal Chaos #2 confirms Armaggon is the shark featured on the variant covers for the first issue.
