The Detroit Zoo's newest addition is something to go ape over: a newborn gorilla.
Officials announced Tuesday that a new western lowland gorilla, a female, was born at the zoo to mom Tulivu and silverback Mshindi on Sunday.
They said it's only the second gorilla birth in Detroit Zoo history.
"Tulivu and her baby are doing well, with mom already showing incredible maternal care as the little one reaches important early milestones," the zoo said in a post on its Facebook page. "They'll be spending a few quiet days bonding behind the scenes while animal care and veterinary teams keep a close eye on the growing family. She won't be viewable to guests just yet, but we'll let you know as soon as that changes."
Officials also said the new arrival doesn't have a name yet.
Her arrival follows the recent births and additions of other animals at the zoo.
In May, Nguvu, a 1-year-old male giraffe, arrived at the zoo.
In April, three North American river otter pups were born at the zoo.
In March, a 2-year-old Siberian tiger named Darya moved to the zoo.
In January, Kali, a 13-year-old polar bear, made the Detroit Zoo its home.
