If you drove past the Denny's diner off Berryessa Road in San Jose back in late 1992, nothing about it would have caught your eye. It was an ordinary, vinyl-booth establishment serving endless drip coffee, Grand Slam breakfasts, and late-night comfort food to local workers and tech engineers. But inside one of those worn vinyl booths sat three men sketching out a vision on paper napkins—a vision that would eventually transform into a multi-trillion-dollar tech giant responsible for powering the modern artificial intelligence landscape.
For 30-year-old Jensen Huang, sitting in that booth felt like coming full circle. Years earlier, long before earning a master's degree in electrical engineering from Stanford, a 15-year-old Jensen took one of his very first jobs at a Denny's in Oregon. Over endless cups of coffee, the trio mapped out their initial business strategy, refined their core ideas, and in early 1993 officially founded NVIDIA with roughly $40,000 in starting capital.
The road from that diner booth to the top of the tech world was anything but easy. The young company nearly went bankrupt in its early years — most notably in 1995, after its first chip failed to gain traction and a partnership with Sega fell through, leaving the company just months from collapse before a Sega executive stepped in with a $5 million investment. NVIDIA survived through sheer persistence, drastic pivots, and relentless engineering focus. The long-term bet the founders made on parallel processing eventually paid off massively: what began as a venture to make PC video games look smoother laid the computational foundation for modern deep learning, high-performance computing, and autonomous systems.
Decades later, after NVIDIA surged into the ranks of the world's most valuable public companies, Jensen Huang returned to that very same San Jose Denny's to celebrate the company's roots. The diner installed a plaque above the historic booth, reading, "The NVIDIA Booth — The booth that launched a trillion-dollar company."
Jensen's journey stands as a powerful reminder of how Silicon Valley innovation actually works.
