Troy Jackson, the presumptive Democratic replacement for Graham Platner in the Maine Senate race, is facing scrutiny over his temper, according to reports from The Washington Post and CNN, both of which interviewed his former colleagues in the state legislature along with other sources.
The reports detailed an incident in which Jackson threw a plastic water bottle during a heated disagreement, engaged in shouting matches with other state lawmakers and cursed in conversations with colleagues. Critics of Jackson have flagged concerns about his temperament, including conflicts he’s had with women lawmakers. His supporters have argued that these conflicts point to his passion for certain legislative positions.

“Jackson has not been accused of any physical abuse or criminal wrongdoing, and even his critics are quick to separate his conduct in the Maine statehouse from the allegations against Platner,” CNN noted.
“Troy Jackson is passionate and deeply invested in the people and policies he advocates for,” Jackson’s campaign said in a statement to the cable news outlet. “Over 22 years in public office, there have been moments when he let his frustration get the better of him. When that happened, he took responsibility and apologized directly at the time.”
Jackson’s campaign also pushed back on the suggestion that the confrontations he had were specifically targeted at female colleagues.
Jackson is on track to secure the Democratic nomination this weekend at the party’s upcoming convention.
