SEC Media Days if off and running as the first day of the biggest offseason event is in the books. Georgia will participate at the event on Tuesday, but they were still a big talking point throughout Monday.
That is to be expected after absolutely dominating he conference for the better part of a decade now, but even though Georgia has won the conference two years in a row there was a weird feeling that none of that mattered. There was just something in the air (and being said and written) on Monday that showed that Georgia wasn't being viewed as the top dog in the conference like they should be.
And On3's Rusty Mansell described this strange feeling to perfection as the consensus was that Georgia (and the rest of the conference for that matter) should just lie down and hand the 2026 SEC Championship trophy to Texas.
Texas is getting the respect that Georgia has earned
What has Texas done since joining the SEC to deserve to be treated like a king? Sure they've had a really good team both in 2024 and 2025, but all they really did was lose to Georgia and watch them lift the SEC Championship trophy.
None of that seems to matter though as the consensus across the country is that Texas is the best thing since sliced bread. Yes, a team that hasn't won the SEC and hasn't won a national title since 2005 is being treated even better than Nick Saban was during the height of his Alabama tenure.
Make that make sense.
Vegas believes Texas will win the SEC this year. Most of the media across the country thinks so as well. But at the end of the day that is probably just fine with Kirby Smart and Georgia.
Kirby Smart was dealt the perfect motivation he needs for the 2026 season
One of the hardest parts about leading a successful program is keeping them motivated. No one has been more successful than Georgia over the last five years, so it could be challenging for Smart to keep his squad motivated.
That however really isn’t the case thanks to Texas. Ever since they joined the SEC all anyone’s ever talked about is how they’re going to be the best program in the league. That still hasn’t happened, but a lot of reporters and fans are sure acting like it.
If the media was constantly singing Georgia’s praises like they deserve then it’d be easy for them to get complacent. But the media instead continues to doubt Georgia and prop Texas up, and that’s all that Smart needs to get a chip on his shoulder and to motivate his team.
Who knows if this phenomenon will ever end, but so far it doesn’t look like Georgia will ever be the media’s darling. That however is probably just fine with Smart and Georgia. They’ll gladly keep winning on the field and let Texas enjoy the offseason hype, because deep down everyone knows they’d would much rather be Georgia right now than the Longhorns.
