A severe drought and high feed costs have shrunk the U.S. cattle herd to its lowest level since 1951, driving up costs. Consequently, Costco cut this low-margin product.

The crisis traces back to West Africa, the source of approximately 70% of global cocoa production, where the harvest was devastated by crop diseases and severe weather patterns. Maintaining the cheap warehouse price simply becomes impossible when the cost of your primary ingredient multiplies by five.
