Second Lady Usha Vance will be taking "a long period out of the public eye" after giving birth to her and Vice President JD Vance's fourth child, her husband announced, adding that he will not take "formal" paternity leave.
The second couple announced Jan. 20 via social media that Usha, 40, was pregnant with their fourth child, marking the first time in more than 150 years that a second lady gave birth while in office. The pair later took to social media again to make a joint post announcing that their son, Alec, was born on the morning of Sunday, July 19, joining his siblings Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4.
“We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning,” they wrote. “Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother.”

They added, "The incredible military doctors and staff members of Walter Reed Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit have been a blessing. We are deeply thankful for all they have done for our family.”
The day after his birth, President Donald Trump shared the first public photograph of Alex being held by his brother, Vivek, who was sitting alongside his sister, Mirabel. Trump wrote, "Congratulations! A perfect baby boy for the wonderful Vance family."
While the Vances have not made any new statements about their parenting plans, the vice president, 41, previously indicated that she would "take a long period out of the public eye," while he continued to work.
“It’s one of these jobs where it’s impossible to completely disconnect from it,” he told NBC News in May. "The good thing about having a little bit of control over your schedule in your life is that you can incorporate your kids in your job in a way that they love."
He added, “I think it’ll mean the kids are probably here at the White House more than they have been the last few months, and I’ll probably be at home a little bit more, and we’ll just make it work.”
Asked by PEOPLE for an updated comment, the White House redirected them to Vance's previous statement to NBC News.
Alec's birth comes shortly after White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt returned to work after taking maternity leave to give birth in May to her second child and weeks after conservative podcaster Katie Miller, wife of White House homeland security advisor Stephen Miller, gave birth to their fourth child.
The vice president previously told FOX News in May 2025 that the couple wants to “deliver as much normalcy to the kids in a very abnormal situation" while serving in the Trump administration.
He noted that his eldest, Ewan, is "adjusting" because he is "aware of it all," while Vivek is "a little bit less aware," adding, "To him, it's just fun. He has a bunch of Secret Service agents to play with, and he gets to go wherever he wants to, and he really likes that."
